Radiating out from this central point, the Lake Taupo District is clean, green New Zealand at its best. The main town in the region is Taupo, situated on the edge of the great lake. Roads to and through the Lake Taupo District are excellent, and the main highways have good passing lanes and clear signs.
From the north, Taupo is a leisurely 4 hour drive from Auckland (278 kms) and from the south, Wellington is about four to five hours away (380 kilometres). Popular in winter - from Taupo township to Mount Ruapehu in the Tongariro National Park for a day’s skiing is just 1 hour 45 minutes drive away.
