Tongariro World Heritage National Park
South of Lake Taupo is Tongariro, a World Heritage National Park.  Boasting three central volcanoes: Mount Tongariro (1957m), Mount Ngauruhoe (2291m) and the active Mount Ruapehu (2797m), last playing up in the late 1990’s.  Created in the 1800’s, the area was gifted to the New Zealand by local Maori – Ngati Tuwharetoa.

Live Volcano Action
Here’s your chance to view a live volcano.  Mount Ruapehu is active and still lets us know about it every now and again.  Take a guided tour to the crater lake in summer and make sure to visit New Zealand’s highest restaurant.

Tongariro Crossing
The Tongariro Crossing is often described as the best one day walk in New Zealand.  Hiking over volcanic terrain, you pass through world heritage park countryside, active volcanoes, beautiful lakes and much more.  It’s free, it’s stunning and it’s only 17 kilometres long.  Alternatively, tour operators offer walking expeditions and scenic flights.

Volcanic Activity Centre
To learn more about this impressive region in the central North Island of New Zealand, visit the Volcanic Activity Centre.  Based in Wairakei, just north of Taupo, it provides interactive displays, informative films, and souvenirs and is open every day.
