Summer and winter, the volcanic zone of Tongariro offer a fascinating and diverse range of action packed attractions: Tongariro World Heritage National Park
South of Lake Taupo is Tongariro, a World Heritage National Park. Boasting three central volcanoes: Mount Tongariro (1957m), Mount Ngauruhoe (2291m) and the active Mount Ruapehu (2797m), last playing up in the late 1990’s. Created in the 1800’s, the area was gifted to the New Zealand by local Maori – Ngati Tuwharetoa. Live Volcano Action

Tongariro Crossing
The Tongariro Crossing is often described as the best one day walk in New Zealand. Hiking over volcanic terrain, you pass through world heritage park countryside, active volcanoes, beautiful lakes and much more. It’s free, it’s stunning and it’s only 17 kilometres long.
