Driving:
From the North: Taupo, Lake Taupo District’s biggest town, is 278 kilometres from Auckland, a journey which takes 3-4 hours by car. To follow the Thermal Explorer Highway, take state highway 1 south from Auckland to Tirau, then branch off on state highway 5 to Rotorua. Follow the signs along state highway 5 to Taupo from there.
Alternatively, you can take state highway 1 from Auckland to Hamilton and Tokoroa, then direct to Taupo. The roads are excellent all the way, with good passing lanes, signposting and small towns and scenic countryside all around to make your journey even more enjoyable. From the South: From Wellington, take State highway one north direct to Taupo, passing through Levin, Taihape and Turangi. New Zealand's capital Wellington is 4-5 hours drive (380 kilometres) from Taupo. By Bus or Shuttle: Professional coach companies operate throughout the north island, delivering an efficient bus service between main centres. The Taupo region’s central location is ideal for coach travel. Taupo and Turangi are linked to numerous other towns in the Lake Taupo district and outside the region by a comprehensive network of bus transport. As well, a number of companies operate daily door to door pick up shuttle services between major North Island centres.
